Travel Director

Department: Destination America

Position Summary

Destination America is seeking highly qualified individuals to fill the role of Travel Director/Traveling Concierge for US-based programs for the 2020 season, which typically runs from May through October. Individuals should be passionate about their region(s) of expertise, possess a desire to share knowledge and stories, be customer-service-centric, and be able to seamlessly manage every detail of our itineraries.  Candidates from all regions are welcome to apply, but strong preference will be given to the following: southeastern USA, northeastern USA, national parks.  Applicants must also be fully available between the months of September and October as this is our peak operating season.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Effectively manage trip logistics and day to day operations for up to 52 guests on a coach, ensuring a seamless travel experience
  • Utilize good judgement and ensure guest safety at all times
  • Provide unparalleled and individualized customer service to each guest on the trip; proactively respond to guest needs
  • Seamlessly manage any challenges that occur during the trip (guest illnesses, lost passports, etc.)
  • Craft and deliver enlightening and detailed stories and commentary in fluent English throughout the trip as a regional expert in the destination
  • Utilize technology on the coach to enhance our guests’ experience while traveling
  • Maintain an organized log to manage and collect trip funds for optional experiences and account for all trip expenses 
  • Build upon our strong relationships with our vendors and various partners, both internally and externally
  • Work closely and collectively with our Operations team while also making effective decisions as needed
  • Other duties as needed


  • Between 3-5 years over the road experience leading multi-national groups preferred.
  • Travel Certificates, Tour Director/Guide Certificate Preferred; ITMI or IGA certification strongly preferred.  
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, the internet, email, and social media.  Must be able to utilize an iPad and various applications, i.e. numbers, excel, and internal platforms. Must have administrative, organizational, and basic accounting skills. 
  • Applicant must speak English fluently.  Must possess excellent customer service skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills.  An ability to positively interact with vendors and guests from various countries, cultures, and ages is required.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 with reasonable accommodation required.
  • Applicant should be able to lift 20 lbs with reasonable accommodation, and be able sit and stand for long period of time, walk frequently and for long distances, and adapt to long working hours for 10 to 20 days at a time.  
  • Exceptional attention to detail, an ability to multitask, time management and organizational skills, and an ability to work well under pressure are required. Strong candidates will possess leadership qualities, high emotional intelligence, cultural sensitivity, and possess a thorough understanding of American history, politics, and culture, as well as have a working knowledge of international and domestic current events.  Applicant should also have previous and applicable work experience in the destination and must be a US citizen or possess a work permit/visa for the US.  Applicant must be available during peak operating season: May/June and September/October.
